Chris Holmes 1956-2011
The Mid Band manager, player, and father of Paul, Matthew, and Rebecca (all Mid Band players) died at Myton Hospice, Bedworth surrounded by his family on 12th January after a long and brave battle against cancer.
Chris (centre of the photograph) managed, despite the condition, to take part in the October Mid band trip to Belgium and Holland; the November L.B.B.A contest; and played in the Festive Concert at Braunstone Civic Centre on December 17th.
He was well-known as a euphonium player who moved to bass to help the Band, and finally taking up the baritone as his health failed and playing became more difficult - though that was not going to stop Chris from enjoying his music making!
The band, under its regular conductor Geoff Newman, his long-time friend, played at his funeral service held for a packed congregation at Ratby Parish Church on January 27th. The massed band, comprising of over 50 players drawn from various bands around the country, featured in its music the solo ‘Where E’er You Walk’ played in tribute by his identical twin brother, the trombonist Steve Holmes: and a piece especially requested by Chris and arranged by the conductor, ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ a piece that could easily be described as Chris’ theme tune.
The donations made to Myton Hospice in Chris’ name totalled over £1,200 at 1st March and are ongoing. A baritone, engraved in memoriam has been presented to the Ratby Mid Band. A ‘living memorial’ is being planned.
Chris is greatly missed by his family and friends and the banding movement.
